BC Home Inspectors will need to be licensed as of April 1st 2009
John van Dongen, B.C. solicitor general and minister responsible for consumers, has announced the regulation of home inspection-a first in Canada. Home inspection has been an unregulated occupation in the province, but this will change as of Wednesday (April 1). Inspectors are now required to obtain a license from the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority.
It's a move that industry players like the B.C. Real Estate Association have welcomed as a way of protecting home buyers. Many see it as a step in the right direction, but some don't think the regulations go far enough in providing uniform standards to qualify inspectors. To become a licensed inspector, one must meet the requirements of either the Canadian Association of Home & Property Inspectors' B.C. branch, the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of B.C., or the National Certification Program for Home and Property Inspectors.
The provincial government estimates that there are between 300 and 400 home inspectors in B.C. As of March 16, some 140 applications for licenses had been received by the BPCPA, a nonprofit corporation established by the province.
